What is Qi?
Qi (pronounced "chee") is the vital life force or energy that flows through all living things in traditional Chinese medicine. It is believed to be the foundation of both physical and mental health. Qi flows through pathways in the body called meridians, which are like channels that connect various organs and systems.
The movement of Qi is crucial to maintaining balance and health. When Qi flows smoothly, a person experiences vitality and well-being. However, if the flow of Qi becomes blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to physical or emotional issues. Acupuncture aims to restore the proper flow of Qi by stimulating specific points along the meridians, helping to clear blockages and promote balance in the body.
Qi can become disrupted in several ways, leading to imbalances in the body. Common causes of Qi disruption include:
1. Emotional Stress: Strong emotions like anger, worry, anxiety, or sadness can obstruct the flow of Qi. These emotions may cause Qi to become stagnant, leading to physical or mental health issues.
Physical Trauma: Injuries or surgeries can block or disturb the flow of Qi, particularly if the body hasn’t fully healed or the energy hasn’t been properly restored.
2. Poor Diet: A diet lacking in nourishment or filled with excessive amounts of unhealthy foods can weaken the body’s Qi, affecting digestion and overall vitality.
3. Lack of Exercise: A sedentary lifestyle can cause stagnation of Qi, while regular movement helps to keep it flowing smoothly throughout the body.
4. Environmental Factors: External factors such as extreme weather, pollution, or even exposure to certain chemicals can disrupt the balance of Qi in the body.
5. Overwork or Exhaustion: Overworking, not getting enough rest, or pushing the body beyond its limits can deplete Qi, leaving the body feeling weak and fatigued.
6. Unresolved Health Conditions: Chronic illness or long-term physical health issues can impair Qi circulation, making it harder for the body to heal or maintain balance.
Acupuncture, along with other practices like meditation, Qi Gong, and herbal remedies, is used to restore the flow of Qi, clear blockages, and address any imbalances that may be present.
Do the acupuncture needles hurt?
Many people associate needles with the pain of a standard hypodermic needle. However, you could fit up to 10 acupuncture needles in the tip of one hypodermic needle. Acupuncture needles are incredibly small, thin, and flexible — about the size of a cat’s whisker. Once inserted, some patients may feel a mild tingling, a sensation of fullness, or a deep sense of relaxation. These sensations are completely normal and indicate that the treatment is working.
What should I expect during my first visit?
During your initial visit, your acupuncturist will take a comprehensive health history, asking detailed questions about your concerns, symptoms, overall health, and lifestyle. They will also examine your pulse, look at your tongue, and perform a physical assessment. This thorough evaluation helps them develop a personalized treatment plan. Sessions typically last between an hour to an hour and a half.
Why do they feel my pulse?
There are 12 pulse positions on each wrist that your acupuncturist will assess. Each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ, providing valuable insights into your overall health. Imbalances or issues often reveal themselves through the pulse.
Why do they look at my tongue?
The tongue serves as a map of the body, reflecting the health of your organs and meridians. Acupuncturists examine its color, shape, cracks, and coating to gain insights into your overall health, such as signs of dehydration, excessive dairy consumption, and more.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies for each individual. While some may experience immediate relief, others might require several months to see significant results. Chronic conditions often take longer to address than acute issues. Generally, it’s best to plan for at least a month of consistent treatments to notice meaningful changes, followed by regular tune-ups to maintain progress.
How much does it cost?
Our rate is $100 per visit, with sessions typically lasting between 1 to 1.5 hours.
Is it covered by my insurance?
Some insurance plans cover acupuncture, so it's a good idea to check with your provider. Be sure to ask us for an invoice after each visit. Here are a few questions to ask your health care provider:
• Will my plan cover acupuncture?
• How many visits per calendar year?
• Do I need a referral?
• Is there a co-pay or deductible?
